5 ways to make your conservatory suitable for use all year round

Conservatories are a great way of adding extra space to your home but many people struggle to use them all year round. In the summer they get too hot and in the winter they get too cold. Because of this, despite the benefits that they offer, many people only use their conservatory for a few months of the year.

The good news is that there are several ways you can make your conservatory suitable for use all year round and below we have highlighted just a few of them.

Allow proper ventilation

If you find that your conservatory gets particularly warm during the summer months, ensure that you’re properly ventilating it. If you can, open any windows as well as the door. Even if it’s warm outside, allowing a breeze to flow through will help to keep it cooler.

Install air conditioning

The cost of installing an air conditioning unit varies depending on the make and model you go for. While it may seem like a big expense, if you like to spend a lot of time in your conservatory, it’s a worthwhile investment. Many modern units also double up as a heater which solves your problem of the conservatory being too cold in the winter.

Solar-assisted air conditioning units

If you’re conscious about saving money and reducing your carbon footprint, solar-assisted air conditioning units are cheaper to run and are great at keeping your conservatory at a steady temperature throughout the year.

Install window shutters

Window shutters are brilliant at insulating any room in your house and unbeknown to many, they’re great for conservatories as well. Because they provide an extra layer of protection, shutters do in fact have heat retention values similar to that of an interior door which is ideal for those cold winter months.

Another benefit of shutters is that they’re great at keeping rooms cool in the summer. If you keep them shut, it stops the heat from coming in but when you adjust the slats slightly, they can still let in natural light.

Flooring

A significant amount of heat is lost through our flooring and conservatories are no exception to this.

If your conservatory always feels cool (even in the summer), it may be worth laying down a carpet. You can also install a layer of sheep wool insulation with your underlay for added warmth. If your conservatory does get warm in the summer however, consider laying down a large rug in the winter which can then be removed once it starts getting warm again.

If you currently have wooden floorboards and you don’t want to change them, check to make sure that heat isn’t escaping through any gaps. There are a number of different ways you can stop draughts coming through your floor and many can be done by yourself.

Another very simple tip for the winter months is to avoid walking around in bare feet. If it’s particularly chilly outside, it will make the room feel much colder than it actually is.
