Carpet Cleaning Tips and Recipes

spilt red wine

Anyone who has children or pets at home will be well aware of how soul destroying it can be when mud is walked through the house, or someone spills a glass of wine, coffee or even worse, cocoa.  Even people who have a ‘no shoe’ policy in the house end up with stains. A professional cleaning service may be a wonderful idea, but often a very expensive solution.

We have all tried the dry powders, but they honestly do not seem to do that much other than make your house smell like you have just dropped a box of detergent in the hall (which in essence is just what you have done).

This leaves you with 3 options

  • The old scrubbing brush and bucket.
  • Rental carpet cleaners. However, be warned, they often try to make you buy the carpet cleaner with the rental. Read our tips below before you fall for this.
  • Buying your own wet/dry hoover or dedicated carpet cleaner can end up costing the same as 2 rental sessions, so if you have the storage space it might be worth thinking about.

Yet after all your hard work there are often still some stubborn stains.

Stain busters

Vinegar and Baking Soda: The order is important here, you don’t want a carpet volcano. We already know that vinegar is a great weapon for fighting carpet stains, but adding a little baking soda can take it to another level.  Simply dab a little vinegar onto the stain then sprinkle the baking soda on top.  Wait for the soda to bubble and bulk up and then leave it to soak up the stain then wipe away or hoover it up.  Don’t leave it too long or rather than a wine stain, you could end up with a bleach mark!

The Steam Iron Trick: This will work using any of the solutions mentioned below. Simply spray the solution onto the stain. Then place a damp, clean white towel over the stain. Put your iron onto the full steam setting and steam iron the towel. Pushing the steam into the stain lifts it out.

Detergent solution: Mix 1/2 teaspoon of a washing up liquid, into one cup of lukewarm water.

Vinegar solution: Mix 2/3 cup of white vinegar with two cups of water.

Ammonia solution:  Mix one tablespoon of clear household ammonia with 1/2 cup of lukewarm water (this is for natural fibres only, but please do read this health warning about ammonia).

Candle Wax: Another clever use for your iron is removing wax from carpeting and cloth. If you spill candle wax, cover it with a few paper towels and gently iron it on a low heat. The wax will liquefy and wick up into the paper towel.

scrubbing a stain

Naturally many of these tricks and tips can be used for cleaning curtains, but you’d have to take them down first and make sure that you have enough space to lay them flat on a cleanable surface so that the dirt from the curtains does not seep into whatever is beneath it.  Naturally we have easy to clean shutters, so all they need is a quick wipe down with a damp cloth.
