Most commonly broken New Year’s resolutions

With the New Year just a few weeks away, you’re probably already starting to think about your resolutions for 2017. While we all start the year with the best of intentions, unfortunately, they don’t always last.

According to the results of a 2015 YouGov poll, 63% of respondents said that they have broken a New Year’s resolution in the past and an incredible 66% said that they did so within the first month.

If you’re wondering what exactly it is that we find it so hard to stick to, below is a list of the 10 most commonly broken New Year’s resolutions:

  • To lose weight and/or get fit
  • Quit smoking
  • Learn something new
  • Eat healthier and diet
  • Get out of debt and save money
  • Spend more time with family
  • Travel to new places
  • Be less stressed
  • Volunteer
  • Drink less

Resolutions you can stick to

If you really want to set yourself a goal for 2017, the good news is that there are a number of ways you can increase your chances of sticking to them:

  • Start small – losing weight and eating healthier are the most common resolutions that people set. The problem is, we go into the New Year with such a drastic change of lifestyle that we’re setting ourselves up for failure. Christmas is all about over-indulgence so to suddenly completely everything is going to be incredibly hard. Rather than thinking you need to spend every day in the gym and completely cut out alcohol, sugar and any unhealthy foods all in one go, use a step-by-step approach. Start by cutting out fizzy drinks for example and aim for one or two gym sessions a week and gradually build yourself up to more.
  • Don’t focus on yourself – another reason why it’s so difficult to stick to New Year’s resolutions is because changing a habit is hard work. If this is something you’ve tried and failed with many times, try setting yourself a goal that isn’t necessarily about you. A great example is doing the house up. You could give the place a fresh coat of paint, declutter, make your windows look beautiful with our beautiful range of solid wood shutters or why not give the garden some much-needed TLC.
  • Reward yourself – the best way to stick to your resolutions isshutterstock_358258697 to reward yourself along the way. If your aim was to get fitter for example and you’ve been sticking to a workout routine, allow yourself a little treat to keep the momentum going. A trip to a spa, a day out with friends or buying that outfit you’ve had your eye on for ages can really help to give you the motivation you need to stick to your resolutions.
  • Stop putting pressure on yourself – it’s unrealistic to completely cut something out of your life forever. If your goal is to give something up, unless it’s a dangerous habit such as smoking for example, give yourself a time period. Say you want to give up chocolate, set yourself a goal of three months rather than saying you will never eat it ever again. It’s also much better to try to cut back on something than to eliminate it from your life altogether.
