When it comes to the art of folding paper, one nation stands out above the rest; Japan. We are all familiar with the term Origami, which is the creative art of modelling with paper. Every single aspect of the art of Origami has deep meaning associated with it. Originally, people gift origami animals to their friends and family in the way that we would give a card saying “get well” or to celebrate a wedding.

The Crane (Tsuru), for example, would be made into a mobile for a new baby. The Crane, in Japanese mythology, is said to live for 1,000 years. It is the symbol of health and longevity. It is also associated with good fortune. A Butterfly (Chocho) is given to a girl before she marries or leaves home. It symbolises spreading her wings and flying gracefully into a new life.

In oriental cultures there is something known simply as “face”. The term face refers to one’s own sense of dignity or prestige in social contexts. In the English-speaking world, the expression “To save face” describes the lengths that an individual may go to in order to preserve their established position in society, taking action to ensure that one is not thought badly of by their peers.

Furoshiki is an extension of Origami.  It is the art of gift wrapping, which demonstrates “face”. Originally all gifts were wrapped in silk rather than paper. Painted silk is not only luxurious but it is also denotes the high esteem of the person receiving the gift. As a result, the Japanese believe that how a gift is presented is an absolute reflection of the way the giver views them.

Here is a wonderful clip which shows how the Japanese wrap gifts in a beautiful, delicate and stylish manner.  When we consider how the Brits tend to wrap gifts, we could certainly do with learning a trick or two from these master craftsmen and women.

As a result of this clip we asked 3 of the ladies in the Purely Window Shutters team to have a go. Alas we didn’t have coloured paper and ribbons, or even double sided sticky tape. All we had was a box of staples and some copier paper which we decorated with our logo on it for fun!

Folding copier paper is not exactly ideal, but the results were still quite impressive. Everyone who tried it said that is was surprisingly easy and have become inspired to wrap their gifts like this. I must say that I would love to look under their trees on Christmas morning.  I have a funny feeling that after the 15th present, they may not be quite as enthusiastic!

We hope we have given you a bit of extra inspiration so that you can show your loved ones just how much you care when you wrap your gifts and pop them under the tree this festive season.  We will certainly be having a go.

Ho Ho Ho – Merry Wrapping!
