Grey - the new white for kitchens!

silver kitchen

A mere 5 years ago, the idea of a hand painted kitchen was out of the question unless you lived in a quaint little cottage in the middle of nowhere. Everyone demanded high gloss white kitchens with invisible handles. Now all that has changed.

According to the design trend setting magazines like Elle Decoration, if you want your kitchen to have the wow factor, the new colour pallets must include a strong element of grey. White, integrated appliances are a no-no, they must now be as visible as the logos on the handbags favoured by footballer’s wives.

While more traditional homes would choose a stone-biscuit shade for their walls, the high end urbanite would prefer to use dynamic blocks of primary colours to show their personality in their very modern homes. Grey is still THE key colour of the future, yet in loft-style living it is just a sleek style of kitchen.

This season’s must have appliances include a wine fridge, a steam oven and an induction hob. Even the most traditional of oven manufacturers, Aga, have produced an induction model!  Another distinct difference which has come to light in the past 5 years is the change in the humble extractor hood.  Once a box shaped contraption, hidden behind a coving panel or integrated behind a pull out cabinet, it has now become a state of the art combination element of the room’s design in its own right.

Companies like Elica have led the charge with some stunning ceiling mounted hoods which almost look like works of art in their own right. Smeg have introduced a revolutionary extractor fan; the kdd90vx downdraft extractor which are embedded into the work top and pop up when you want them.  Very nifty indeed!

To some extent, grey, in its various shades from the palest turquoise grey to the deep and bold gunmetal colour, has taken over the whole home in interior design terms.  Yet as we all know, trends do change. If you are looking to stay in vogue then you need to pick wisely in terms of which trend to pick. If your surname is Rockefeller or Hilton you may be able to redecorate one home from top to bottom each year while living in another home, but we mere mortals have to consider our pennies more carefully.

Painting walls, wooden doors, shutters and skirting boards is relatively easy so if you are considering investing in a new kitchen and want it to stand the test of time, then consider buying one which is made of painted wood as it will give you endless options for the future.

Window shutters are still definitely in vogue. While the majority may favour one of our 7 shades of white to cream, there are a number of shutters in our range which can be painted in any Fallow and Ball, Dulux, Laura Ashley or Fired Earth paint colour you desire. Talk to our surveyors today and see how our plantation shutters can transform your room.
