How to keep your house cool during the Summer months

turning on switch

Summer is fast approaching and although the warmer days and lighter evenings are much appreciated by most, it can leave us feeling all hot and bothered as we struggle to keep our homes cool. Below are a few great ways you can help to keep your house a bit cooler during the summer months.

Keep appliances off during the day

The appliances in our home generate a huge amount of heat so wherever you can, try to keep them off during the day. If you need to do a load of washing or run the dishwasher, try to save it for the evening when it’s naturally a bit cooler. Also consider unplugging things such as the television and mobile phone chargers as they can get very hot even when they’re not being used.

Keep windows and doors closed

When our house is warm, most of us naturally open windows or doors to get a bit of fresh air in. Believe it or not however, this is actually counter-productive because unless there’s a cool breeze, all you’re doing is letting in the heat and humidity. Try to leave ventilating the house until the evening when the temperature is cooler or for days where it’s no warmer than 25C.

Plantation shutters

If you’re house gets very warm in the summer, keep curtains, blinds and shutters closed in any rooms the sun shines directly into. Plantation shutters are particularly helpful for regulating the temperature in your house because they allow you to control the amount of light coming in whilst improving ventilation.

It’s also very important to ensure that your window dressings are light in colour, preferably white. White reflects the sun whereas dark colours like black absorbs it which means that your house will be much hotter as a result.

Insulate your loft

Loft insulation is typically associated with helping to keep your house warm during the winter but they can also help to prevent cool air from escaping through your ceiling. You can also insulate your external walls (sometimes known as cavity wall) if you want to keep out any heat from the sun.

Further great news about insulating your loft and walls is that you’re highly likely to save on emissions which means that you will save money on your bills as well as be more environmentally friendly.

Use fans

Fans are a great way of creating a cool breeze in your home. Ceiling fans can help to produce a much needed flow of air through the house and other types of fans are perfect if you want to direct the cold air onto yourself for example.

A great tip when using fans is to place a bowl of ice in front of it. The breeze will pick up cool water from the surface of the ice which will create a very pleasant cooling mist. If you don’t have a fan, hanging a wet sheet in front of a window produces a similar cooling effect.

Use trees and plants

Using trees and plants to absorb some of the light coming into your house can be a great way to help keep it cooler. Pot plants on window sills and deciduous trees strategically placed to the east and west of your home can provide shade in the summer and even admit light and warmth during the colder winter months.
